General Medical Calculators

Essential general medical calculators for anthropometric measurements, fluid management, and basic clinical formulas.

Why This Matters

Anthropometric measurements including BMI, BSA, and ideal body weight are fundamental clinical tools used across all medical specialties. They guide drug dosing, nutritional assessment, and surgical planning. Electrolyte calculations (anion gap, corrected calcium, corrected sodium) are critical for acid-base and electrolyte disorder diagnosis. These calculators are among the most frequently used tools in daily clinical practice.

When to Use

Use BMI for obesity screening and nutritional assessment. Use BSA for chemotherapy dosing and cardiac index calculations. Use Ideal Body Weight for drug dosing and ventilator settings. Use BMR/Mifflin-St Jeor for caloric needs assessment. Use anion gap, corrected calcium, and corrected sodium for metabolic and electrolyte disorders.

Our general medicine calculators are based on widely validated formulas including the Mosteller BSA equation, the Devine IBW formula, the Mifflin-St Jeor BMR equation, and standard electrolyte correction formulas. These tools are referenced in major textbooks including Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine and UpToDate.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mosteller formula is the most widely used BSA formula in clinical practice due to its simplicity and accuracy. The DuBois formula is an alternative with slightly better accuracy at extremes of body size. Both are included in our calculator for your convenience.
Corrected calcium adjusts total calcium for albumin levels. Use it when interpreting calcium in patients with abnormal albumin levels. The formula adds 0.8 mg/dL to total calcium for every 1 g/dL decrease in albumin below 4 g/dL. In patients with normal albumin, total calcium is reliable without correction.
The fluid deficit in adults is calculated using the formula: Deficit (L) = 0.6 × weight (kg) × (1 - 140/serum Na). For children, the deficit is estimated clinically based on degree of dehydration (mild 3-5%, moderate 6-9%, severe ≥10% of body weight). Our calculator uses the adult formula based on corrected sodium levels.
