Pulmonology & Respiratory Clinical Calculators

Evidence-based pulmonology calculators for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) staging, asthma control assessment, dyspnea evaluation, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) classification.

Why This Matters

Chronic respiratory diseases affect over 545 million people worldwide, with COPD as the third leading cause of death globally. Asthma affects 262 million people, causing significant morbidity and healthcare utilization. The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) reports that COPD is underdiagnosed, with up to 70% of cases undetected in some regions. Standardized assessment tools like GOLD staging, ACT, MMRC, and CAT are essential for objective disease classification, treatment guidance, and monitoring response to therapy. The ARDS Berlin definition standardized the diagnosis of acute respiratory distress syndrome, which affects 10% of ICU admissions worldwide with mortality rates of 35-46%. Using these validated tools ensures consistent, evidence-based care across respiratory medicine.

When to Use

Use GOLD Staging for COPD severity classification based on FEV1 and exacerbation history. Use ACT (Asthma Control Test) for asthma control assessment in patients aged 12+. Use MMRC (Modified Medical Research Council) Dyspnea Scale for quantifying breathlessness in respiratory disease. Use CAT (COPD Assessment Test) for comprehensive COPD symptom impact assessment. Use ARDS Berlin Criteria for diagnosing and classifying acute respiratory distress syndrome in ICU patients.

Our pulmonology calculators are developed in accordance with the latest GOLD 2024 Strategy Report, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) 2024 guidelines, and the Berlin Definition of ARDS (JAMA 2012). Each tool includes the original validation data, clinically relevant cutoff values, and guideline-based treatment recommendations tailored to each severity category.

Frequently Asked Questions

COPD is a progressive, largely irreversible lung disease primarily caused by smoking, characterized by chronic inflammation and airflow limitation. Asthma is typically reversible, often allergic/atopic in origin, with variable symptoms. COPD is diagnosed in adults >40 years with smoking history, while asthma can begin at any age. Both cause cough and dyspnea but differ in pathophysiology, treatment approach, and prognosis.
The ACT should be administered at every clinical visit for asthma patients. GINA recommends assessing asthma control at each visit using either the ACT or GINA control criteria. Regular monitoring allows timely treatment adjustment — stepping up therapy for uncontrolled asthma and stepping down when well-controlled for at least 3 months.
GOLD stage 2 (moderate) COPD is defined by FEV1 between 50% and 79% of predicted. Stage 1 (mild) is FEV1 ≥80%, stage 3 (severe) is FEV1 30-49%, and stage 4 (very severe) is FEV1 <30% predicted. Our calculator also incorporates the GOLD 2023 ABCD classification based on exacerbation history and symptom burden for comprehensive treatment guidance.
